More hospitals implement visitor ban to protect against flu
Hospital officials say the restrictions will continue until flu cases have significantly declined.
RALEIGH -- WakeMed and Rex Hospitals in Raleigh are joining many others around the state and restricting visits by children under 18 in hopes of limiting the spread of the H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses.
Younger people are at a greater risk for the H1N1 strain of flu so hospital officials say this will help ensure the safety of patients, staff and adult visitors. Visitation to the pediatric units will also be restricted to parents and direct caregivers.
Rex Hospital is restricting all visitors 12 years old and younger, and UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill is restricting that same age group from its newborn critical care center, the pediatric intensive care unit and the labor and delivery unit.
Charlotte-area hospitals announced similar restrictions last week. They have banned visits by children under 18 with some exceptions, including children accompanying parents to the emergency room and children who are visiting dying relative.
Officials say the restrictions will continue until flu cases have significantly declined. A H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available some time this month.
