GREENSBORO – With the holiday season approaching, police warn that criminal activity may soon begin to rise. The Greensboro program Daughter Safe is looking to teach women to prepared against any possible attack.
Mike Carr, a fifth degree black belt who has taught martial arts in Greensboro for 15 years, developed the program to arm women of all ages with practical defense strategies as they head into the holidays.
“Predators know they have money on them,” Carr said. “They're not paying attention to when they get out of their car, they're not paying attention when they get into their car. They're walking out of the store with bags, so it's a real easy time for a predator to attack someone.”
During the three-hour class, students learn how to avoid dangerous situations, how to fend off an attack, and if necessary, fight back.
“I knew to be aware and look out for trouble, but I think I didn't know what to do if trouble came to me, if I wasn't able to avoid id,” class participant Sue Fisher said. “I think that extra step of knowing what to do if something actually does happen, it's important.”
Carr said the class isn't just about fighting off an attacker; it's about thinking smarter.
“So many times young girls running in the park with ear phones on, listening to music, have no idea there could be a guy coming up behind them, moms coming out of a store looking for their keys, as opposed to having their keys in their hand,” Carr said. “This class is about self protection.”
The next open class is on Dec. 5. The cost is $49 per person, but discounts are available.
