RALEIGH -- The state's chief medical examiner says his office made a mistake when it determined that an 11-month-old found dead in a Raleigh apartment fire died of alcohol poisoning.

According to a report in The News and Observer, Dr. John Butts says a vial containing a sample belonging to someone else was mistakenly labeled with the child's name.

In February, police say a man stabbed the baby's mother to death in the apartment then shot himself after setting it on fire.

Firefighters found the bodies of the man, woman and baby after they put out the flames.

Butts said he hopes his office will determine a cause of death for the child by the end of the week.
