SELMA, N.C. -- Twenty-eight students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after three school buses collided in Selma on Wednesday.

The accident happened on Highway 96 around 4 p.m., and calls went out for nearly a dozen ambulances.

Officials with Johnston County Schools have confirmed that at least 28 students have been taken to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries. Fifteen students were taken away by ambulance, 13 to Johnston Memorial Hospital and two to WakeMed Hospital.

An additional 13 students suffered more minor injuries and were taken by school bus to Johnston Memorial.

The driver of one of the buses suffered neck injuries and was taken to Johnston Memorial. In addition, one parent suffered a panic attack and was also taken to the hospital.

The three buses were driving from Selma Elementary and Selma Middle schools. The uninjured students were taken by bus back to Selma Elementary where alternate transportation was to be made available. Most parents came and picked up their children there.

School officials say drivers have a list of all the students on the bus, and they planned to call parents to let them know where their child is and whether their child was injured in the crash.

The bus drivers involved in the accident will be taken off their routes to go through drug and alcohol screenings, according to school officials.
