Checkers set hockey aside for charity

CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Checkers traded their hockey gear in for trays and aprons this weekend.

The team waited tables at the Brixx Pizza in uptown Charlotte Sunday night to raise money for juvenile diabetes.

Said Jeff Longo, president of the Checkers, “That is the greatest thing about this organization. It is so easy for us to get our players to interact. They want to do it, and they are volunteering to be here."
