CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Diocese has received a number of tickets for the upcoming papal mass in New York City. The mass will be held Sunday, April 20 at Yankee Stadium and only 100 people from the Charlotte area will be able to attend.

Jackie May is hoping to plan a trip to New York if she snags a ticket to see the pontiff.

"It's just a chance if you get it that's great," she said.

Those interested in attending, can apply online. The application process, which is similar to a lottery, will be open until midnight Tuesday and notification will be made on Ash Wednesday.

"We just put this thing online yesterday and we already have 150 applications, so we already have more applications than we have tickets for," Charlotte Diocese spokesman David Hains said.

Charlotte Bishop Peter Jugis will be traveling to papal masses in both Washington, D.C., and New York. Raleigh Bishop Michael Burbidge is confirmed for D.C. only. A spokesperson for the Raleigh Diocese says it has not received tickets for New York's papal mass but it has put in a request. It anticipates 100 tickets and the same kind of demand.

"There are a lot of people who would basically plan a trip around these tickets," Hains said.

Tickets are free and they are non-transferable, so whoever applies must be able to attend. A photo ID will need to be shown at the entrance to Yankee Stadium before attending mass.

Tickets for the D.C. mass have not been allotted just yet. A spokesperson for the Raleigh Diocese says its possible more tickets will be available for that one because of its geographic distance to North Carolina.
