Forget the beach, it's volunteering time

By: News 14 Carolina Web Staff

CHARLOTTE -- Some students from James Madison University in Virginia are spending their spring break doing various service projects throughout the Queen City.

The program is set up through Life Span, a non-profit organization that helps people with developmental disabilities. While many of their fellow classmates are spending time on the beach, those volunteering say they are having just as much fun with their break.

"I think of lot [of people] at JMU … love giving back to the community,” said sophomore Amanda Zimmerman. “And that's something JMU really stresses a lot. I really enjoy serving other people and helping others. For all the things that we have at JMU and in our own lives that we kind of take for granted, it's nice to give back once in a while."

There are 10 students on the trip to Charlotte, and 300 JMU students are participating in alternative spring break programs this week.
