DURHAM -- N.C. Central University will move forward with a controversial master plan for new construction on campus.

The board of trustees voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve the draft, which includes plans through 2017. Some people who live near campus voiced opposition at the meeting because plans include leveling 136 homes, forcing residents to move.

They have their own ideas on how the university could expand, such as using satellite campuses. Others who live nearby say they understand the need for growth at the university and are willing to move.

Some faculty members spoke up to say NCCU must continue to expand in order to be competitive, and that it should be done as quickly as possible.
