CHARLOTTE – The Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services was once again under the microscope this week, as county commissioners took a look at the organization and the county’s internal audit department at their Tuesday night meeting.

In recent months, DSS has faced allegations of misspending tens of thousands of dollars tied to the Giving Tree program. This spring, Director Mary Wilson ordered an internal audit which uncovered sloppy bookkeeping.

From June until as recently as last week, county leaders and commissioners were under the impression that $23,000 were still unaccounted for. Tuesday, they learned the county’s internal audit department had found the missing money.

Many commissioners were unhappy about the miscommunication. Now, the commission has agreed to have a county committee investigate issues of confidence and ethics in Mecklenburg County government as a whole.

A separate CMPD investigation is under way to determine whether anyone within DSS intentionally broke the law.
