CHERRY POINT – Some Cherry Point Marines will have a happier Thanksgiving this year thanks to a donation by the New Bern Military Alliance.
The group gave $1,000 to the base’s Thanksgiving meal program. The money will help the military give $50 vouchers to Marines, allowing them to buy a meal more befitting the holiday.
Those eligible include junior Marines and sailors recommended by their commander. They also must have family in the area.
"I think it’s an awesome experience,” said PO1 Micheale Lawson of the U.S. Navy. “It brings me such joy to see the junior Marines and sailors or other military members onboard Cherry Point and the joy they have when they receive it."
This is the first time the base received outside donations for the program. So far, Cherry Point has collected $10,000 for Thanksgiving meals.
