RALEIGH – During the football game between N.C. State and UNC Saturday, fans were able to give to the endowment that began in honor of former N.C. State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who died of cancer in January.
The Key Yow Scholarship Mobile Giving Campaign accepted donations during the game from fans both at the stadium and at home who sent a text message with the word GO to 50555. Each message sent was a $5 contribution.
The scholarship gives opportunities to young women at N.C. State. And this year, it's taking on a special meaning.
“As a Carolina fan, I found it hard the last couple of years when Carolina and State would play. I found it hard, my allegiance was to Carolina, but how do you pull against Kay Yow with the person that she is?” Matthew Mcaulay, a UNC graduate, said.
The Wolfpack football team has also been touched by cancer. Most recently, Dana Bible, the offensive coordinator, was diagnosed with leukemia.
"All of our thoughts and prayers go out to he and his family. And we know the Wolfpack nation is keeping him in our thoughts and prayers," Bobby Purcell, the Wolfpack Club executive director, said.
While the fans cheer for their favorite team, they also cheer that someone will find a cure for cancer.
"Bad things happen to good people sometimes, and we just have to move forward, and the Wolfpack nation will survive," Al Warwick, a NCSU graduate, said.
The campaign will continue until next November.
