CHARLOTTE – For the second year, South Carolina is sponsoring the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday. Unlike similar weekends, only guns can be bought in the state free of tax.

The holiday even had some North Carolinians crossing the border to get a deal. It lasts for through the 48 hours following Thanksgiving.

The best deals only come with rifles and shotguns because the law allows customers from North Carolina to buy them and carry them out of the store. There are different rules for handguns.

“North Carolina residents, for instance, come in here for a handgun,” Blair Wisher, owner of Sportsman, Inc., said. “We would book out to the dealer they want and from there, they would have to pick it up from that dealer.”

The customer would have to pay for the gun and any additional fees charged for the transfer, which is not cost effective.

Accessories like ammunition, carrying cases and gun barrels were not exempt from taxes. The tax free weekend ends Saturday night.
