CHARLOTTE – The legal representative of a man who claims Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason assaulted filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Charlotte against the NFL player.

Beason is accused of punching Gregory Frye in the face at the Uptown Cabaret two weeks ago. Frye says the all-pro football player sucker-punched him at least twice and he is suing Beason for at least $10,000.

According to the lawsuit filed by Frye's attorney, Curtis Osborne, Beason took offense to something Frye said while the two were at the strip club.

"Mr. Frye suffered a crushed nasal cavity and a fractured facial bone, which will require corrective reconstructive surgery," Osborne said.

But Beason says he's innocent. His attorney told News 14 Carolina that "Beason looks forward to his day in court and to getting his good name cleared."

"It was something that we were aware of via the police department, and like any kind of charges, there's always two sides to it, so we'll let the process play itself out," Panthers coach John Fox said on the WBT Radio show Panthers Talk.

Beason's first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 11. His attorney says the linebacker will plead not guilty.
