Bringing track cycling to the Carolinas
Members of the Carolina Velodrome Association want to build an outdoor cycling track. It would look similar to a miniature NASCAR speedway.
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- It's like NASCAR but on two wheels, and it could be coming to Rock Hill. For more than five years a small group has been working to bring track cycling to the Carolinas, but they need Rock Hill town leaders to make it happen.
Just by looking at the walls and chatting with the customers in the Rock Hill Bike Shop, Andrew Morrison says Rock Hill cycling is alive and well.
"It's obvious to see," Morrison exclaimed.
Morrison is the shop mechanic and salesman. He says in all his dealings, he's heard the rumors that a velodrome is in the works.

"I just heard things floating around," explained Morrison. "It would be one of the only velodromes on the East Coast."
Members of the Carolina Velodrome Association want to build an outdoor cycling track. It would look similar to a miniature NASCAR speedway. If constructed it would host Olympic and amateur races. To help muster support, the group sent letters to fellow cyclists -- hoping the letters will help sway Rock Hill commissioners to give them the green light.
Mike Cowan is one of the founders of the Carolina Velodrome Association. "It will be a public and private venture," explained Cowan.
Construction of the facility will cost $4.4 million. It could house three major events, and 100 smaller ones. It will have a concrete infield, lockers, concessions, lights, and stadium seating.
Money has been pledged for the project and land has been set aside. Association members say it's a matter of commissioners agreeing to help pay. They meet with town leaders next month.
Andrew Morrison hopes commissioners do. If so, he says the velodrome will add members to the sport and customers to his store.
