RDU -- When ExpressJet started offering low-cost flights out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport last spring, owners were optimistic. But now the line to the airline's service desk is empty.

"When you buy a plane ticket, there's always fear that between the time you buy your plane ticket and the time you get to your flight, the airline will change its plans," said Jeremy Smith, who has never flown on ExpressJet before.

A list of complications derailed ExpressJet's plans, and the biggest culprit has been the rising fuel prices. Those prices have already drowned other low-cost airlines like Skybus.

In January, the company announced it would cut flights to Alabama and Florida. Last December, the carrier pulled out of its Louisville hub.

Now it has completely stopped all its services out of RDU.

Smith said he's not surprised.

"You see a lot of fuel surcharges in taxes. A lot of different corporations, organizations use gasoline," he said.

But high gas prices are to blame for many airline cutbacks. Continental Airlines said it's cutting 3,000 jobs and reducing its capacity.

United also followed suit, cutting jobs and grounding its coach-only flights. American and Delta also face similar issues, however Delta cut its flight capacity about 10 percent.

With near-record fuel prices, some people worry the problem is only going to get worse.

"I am concerned that when I do fly, flights I am interested in may not be available or they may change at the last minute," said consumer Marvin Smith.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Smith said he can't worry about it too much because he has a flight to catch.

RDU has other airlines that offer service to New Orleans and San Antonio through their hubs.
