Deal reached after apartments flooded

CHARLOTTE -- Taxpayers, private companies and insurance will help pay for the flood damage last month at the Cavalier Apartments.

Heavy rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay caused the flooding. There had been a dispute as to who would pay for the damage.

Mecklenburg County took over the apartments in June and offered flood insurance. However, 25 families’ paperwork was not properly turned in to authorities. An agreement will now have the private companies pay 80 percent of the claims. The remaining 20 percent – as much as $36,000 – will be paid by the county.

Most residents are now out of the Cavalier Apartments. The rest have until Sept. 18 to move out. The plan is to then tear down the flood-prone buildings.
