Officials meeting over VA center plans
SALISBURY -- Friday, officials at the Hefner VA Medical Center will talk about changes at the campus and how those changes will impact veterans’ access to services.
The changes were announced last week, and since then veterans and politicians have been criticizing the plan.
Hefner VA Hospital will close the emergency room and vets will seek emergency care at hospitals near them. This is all part of an effort to provide care to vets where they live. The VA says most vets who travel to Salisbury for care are actually from Winston-Salem and Charlotte.

The VA guarantees partnerships will be in place for vets to receive emergency medical care at local hospitals.
Rep. Mel Watt was the first to speak out against the changes that will affect thousands of veterans. Watt demands an explanation for the changes and suspects this is part of a national effort to privatize veterans’ health care.
