CHARLOTTE -- Hundreds of items are being pulled from grocery store shelves because of a possible salmonella contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration urges consumers to stay clear of any items containing peanut butter until they know more about the salmonella contamination. The FDA says the outbreak has been linked to Peanut Corporation of America, which is located in Blakely, Georgia.

The FDA believes jars of peanut butter are safe but is still trying to determine what products made with peanut butter paste may be harmful.

"The peanut butter and peanut butter paste recalled by PCA is used by many other manufactures to make a variety of other peanut containing products such as cookies, crackers, cereals, and ice cream," said Stephen Sundlof with the FDA, Food Safety Center.
The N.C. Department of Health says an elderly man who died in November tested positive for salmonella. An investigation is ongoing to see if the salmonella is linked to the latest peanut butter contamination.

Health officials say the outbreak has sickened hundreds of people and killed at least six.

"I wish they'd be more diligent about the stuff they allow. If this is the stuff getting through already, I can imagine other things that are getting through," said consumer Kristie Shurtleff.

Some companies have voluntarily pulled products from the shelves while the FDA continues with its investigation.
