CHARLOTTE – Mecklenburg County commissioners were warned on Tuesday night of possible widespread service cuts of more than $40 million if the funding for CMS stays flat next year.

Last week, the superintendent of CMS told school board members he wanted the same amount of school funding next year as the district gets this budget year. Dr. Peter Gorman made that request as the county faces an expected $79 million shortfall in the budget year starting in July.

Among the scenario of $41 million in additional cuts, county officials said 400 jobs would be eliminated – including 164 filled positions. County employees would also see a 15 percent reduction in pay and library hours would be reduced by 30 percent.

Meanwhile, the county reserve funds would be cut by 75 percent.

Harry Jones, the Mecklenburg County manager, will announce his recommended budget, including that of CMS, on May 11.
