GAFFNEY, S.C. -- A mother and daughter were laid to rest Sunday in Gaffney, S.C.; victims of what police say is a serial killer that has taken five lives so far in the small town.
Gena Linder Parker, a popular school teacher in the area, and her mother, 83-year-old Hazel Linder, were found shot to death Wednesday. Family and friends gathered in downtown Gaffney on Sunday afternoon to pay their respects.
"That was a hard thing Thursday when he came home and I had to explain his teacher wasn't coming back to school this year," said Laurie Smith of explaining Parker’s death to her son. "Somebody evil took someone so precious from us."
Parker, 50, was a popular third-grade teacher at Calhoun Academy of the Arts in Anderson. She was described as a ray of sunshine, always looking after her students, by attendees Sunday.
"[She was a] very nice teacher,” said student, Hayden Smith. “In her room she had a lot of pigs, and she told us about her husband who coached football for Hanna. Every time before we went out of school she would always put her lipstick on."
Smith, one of Parker's students, may be too young to understand the magnitude of what's happening in Gaffney. But he said he was sad to learn about his teacher's death.
Friends say there will be another memorial service for the teacher Monday in Anderson at New Spring Church.
Killer still on the loose after five people murdered
Investigators released a sketch of the man suspected of killing all five victims. Police believe he’s about 6-feet, 2-inches tall with salt and pepper hair. He could be driving a gray or champagne 1991-1994 Ford Explorer Sport.
