CHARLOTTE – The investigation continues Monday into reports of misspending by the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services.

A recent audit ordered by the department’s director uncovered sloppy bookkeeping, missing receipts and incorrectly-written checks for an unknown period of time. Harry Jones, county manager, has temporarily put the DSS finance department under direct county control.

The committee overseeing an internal county probe is set to meet Monday to discuss ways to prevent such abuses in the future.

The Mecklenburg Co. DSS is one of the county’s biggest agencies, with about 1,200 employees and a budget close to $180 million.
