PLYMOUTH, N.C. -- Civil War re-enactors are gearing up for the Battle of Plymouth this weekend.

Living History Weekend features battle reenactments and demonstrations of blacksmithing, bullet making and historical crafts.

Wilmington author Stan Atamanchuk, writer of "Commando's Heart," a historical fiction novel about the battle, says this weekend’s events are not to be missed.

"They have scenes that they act out like miniature plays of the battle,” he said. “It was a huge battle, the second largest in North Carolina, and you'll see re-enactments of actual battles that happened in Plymouth.

“You'll see the fall of Fort Comfer, which was the defining moment for the fall of Plymouth for the Confederates taking over and you'll see cannons being loaded and fired and the CSS Albemarle actually on the river."

The event takes place April 24 through 26.
