WILMINGTON – Dozens took part in the fifth annual Flower Launch on Tuesday evening in Wilmington.

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and community members tossed a flower into the Cape Fear River to represent each person or organization that works to prevent child abuse.

Hundreds of flowers floated down the river by the time the event was over. New Hanover County’s district attorney, Ben David, says the people who work hard for children in the community deserve to be recognized.

"We should celebrate the people on the front lines who are making a difference in the lives of children, whether its law enforcement or judges and lawyers in court advocating on their behalf,” said David. “This is a time for all of us to come together to celebrate those efforts to keep this a community where kids can grow."

In addition to the Flower Launch, there was music, poetry and dancing.
