WILMINGTON, N.C. – Five South Brunswick High School employees were fired on Tuesday for leaving a mentally-disabled student behind on a field trip.

Officials say a couple called police after finding the 16-year-old student by himself at Greenfield Lake Park on April 23. The couple later helped return the student to his parents.

Brunswick school leaders say the five staff members – two teachers, two therapeutic assistants and a bus driver – violated field trip policy. They were all suspended with pay after the incident. But Tuesday night, the Brunswick County School Board voted to fire them.

Superintendent and school board members said field trip policies are being reviewed with all staff members to make sure an incident like these don't happen again.
