JACKSONVILLE – Former Camp Lejeune Marine Cesar Laurean pleaded not guilty when he appeared in an Onslow County courtroom Monday.

The 22-year-old is accused of killing a pregnant colleague, Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, before fleeing to Mexico.

He remains jailed without bond, and attorneys said the case won't go to trial before March of 2010.

Sheriff's deputies found Lauterbach’s charred remains in January 2008 under a fire pit in Laurean's backyard. She was eight months pregnant.

Laurean fled the country, but was arrested in Mexico about three months later. After a year of working with the Mexican court system, he was extradited back to Onslow County in March.

Lauterbach had accused Laurean of raping her before her murder. DNA evidence last month confirmed that Laurean was not the father of Lauterbach's unborn baby.

Due to extradition laws, Laurean is not eligible for the death penalty.

Laurean was officially discharged from the Marine Corps in April.
