WILMINGTON – A Wilmington police officers has been arrested in Brunswick County, charged with assaulting his wife.

Brunswick County deputies arrested Officer James Eldridge on Tuesday after an incident in Leland. Arrest warrants show the assault happened at Eldridge’s home. The report also shows a gun was involved, but it’s not clear in what way.

Court documents also showed that Eldridge was charged with kicking his wife in the head and grabbing her arms.

Wilmington Police Department officials say Eldridge has been on the force since January 2007. He has now been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Eldridge remains in the Brunswick County jail.
