CAMP LEJEUNE – North Carolina-based troops are in the middle of a major new offensive in Afghanistan.
Some 4,000 Marines from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade are in the fight, called "Strike of the Sword." Marines from both Camp Lejeune and from the Combat Aviation Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg are pursuing Taliban insurgents in Southern Afghanistan.
Marine command in Afghanistan confirms thousands of Marines went into the Taliban-controlled villages in southern Afghanistan Thursday in Helman Province.
At least one Marine has been killed and several others injured in the combat.
This is the first major operation under President Barack Obama to stabilize the country. Under his plan, the Marines are to clear insurgents from the area before the presidential election in August.
In all, Obama ordered 21,000 troops to Afghanistan.
This is the latest Marine offensive since the one in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004.
In all, about 7,000 Marines are deployed to Afghanistan.
