BEAUFORT, N.C. -- Carteret County Sheriff's Deputies are asking the public to help them catch the person responsible for shooting a prized racehorse in Beaufort.
The animal's owner, Elizabeth Loftin, told authorities someone shot her horse, Breeze, in the head sometime between Sunday and Monday. The horse is valued at about $30,000, and investigators believe it was targeted.
"When I found the bullet hole dead center in her forehead, this was a calculated kill, it put me on my knees and I guess that's what the killer wanted; he wanted to hurt me so bad," Loftin said.
Deputies say the horse was likely shot with a high-powered rifle but there are few other clues leading them to the shooter.
"From our investigation, there are limited people who know where those horses are kept, so strictly now we are sitting back and fielding our Crime Stoppers tips to see if we can develop a suspect," Lt. Michael Panzarella said.
Loftin says she was excited because Breeze was eight-months pregnant.
“I can never get this back. I can never replace this," she said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers ate (252) 726-INFO.
