City mulls central transportation hub

FAYETTEVILLE – Travelers in the All-American City could soon have a one-stop shop for several forms of transportation.
The city is considering building a two-story transportation hub that would offer travelers several options to take them where they're going.
Consultants call it a Multi-Modal Transportation Center. It would be located on Hay Street between the Amtrak train station and the Prince Charles Hotel and would provide travelers with easy access to the train. It would also feature areas for taxis, Greyhound buses and rental retail space.
The proposed center would also replace the city bus transfer station on Old Wilmington Road.

"It's a common point for everyone to transition from, and so it's a great concept," said Ron Macaluso, the city’s transit director.
Brenda Young and some other residents who ride the city's buses like the idea, too.
"I think it's wonderful,” she said. “Everybody can get to go where they need to go in just one specific place. They don't have to go all over town just to find how to get a cab, train or bus.
The project would cost more than $15 million, but 90 percent of that would be paid for by state and federal transportation dollars, meaning taxpayers would be responsible for paying only 10 percent of the cost.
Macaluso said consultants want it to be much more than just a common transition point for travelers.
"They want it to be a destination, not just a pass-through,” he said. “They want people to come here. They want to have the services, the facilities there, plus the access to the rest of the downtown area."
