FAYETTEVILLE – Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts on Friday in celebration of National Doughnut Day. Participating stores will give out a doughnut of your choice in honor of the day.
The day was started in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to raise money for charity and honor Salvation Army volunteer from World War I who baked doughnuts for American soldiers fighting in the trenches.
Helping the Salvation Army on Friday is Krispy Kreme.
Krispy Kreme opened its first store in Winston-Salem in 1937. During Friday’s giveaway, Salvation Army volunteers will be at Krispy Kreme with the Red Kettle. They are raising money to support programs like Kids 2 Kamp, which provides overnight and day camp programs for children.
National Doughnut Day is held the first Friday of every June.
