RALEIGH -- North Carolina is the 12th fattest state among adults and ranks 14th in childhood obesity in the country, according to a report released Wednesday by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The Tar Heel State has a 28.3 percent obesity rate among adults, and according to the report, it saw a statistically significant increase for three years in a row. Among children age 10 to 17, the state’s obesity rate is 33.5 percent.

Mississippi led the way in both adults (32.5 percent) and children (44.4 percent).

According to the report, adult obesity rates now exceed 25 percent in 31 states and exceed 20 percent in 49 states and Washington, D.C. Two-thirds of American adults are either obese or overweight.

Adult rankings were based on combining three years of data (2006-2008) from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The child rankings were based on the National Survey of Children's Health, a phone survey of parents with children ages 10-17 conducted in 2007 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
