Police wait for suspect to leave hospital
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- The Surry County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warrant for first-degree murder after a man was seen running from the scene of his wife’s death in Mount Airy.

Christopher Scott Hiatt, 26, is currently at Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center being treated for at least one gunshot wound. Authorities took him into custody on Monday after they say he pulled a gun and exchanged shots with officers.

He will be taken back into custody once he’s released from the hospital.

Deputies found his wife – 19-year-old Deonna Hiatt – in a Chevy Silverado truck on Sunday. She had been shot in the head and pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital.
