ASHEBORO, N.C. – Zoo keepers and aquarists are being honored as zoos and aquariums across the country celebrate National Zoo Keeper Week/ At the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, N.C., about 80 men and women tend to the needs of the zoo’s animals.
The zoo keepers monitor their diets and changes in behavior.
“The main draw and the main thing the public wants to see is dependent on how the zoo keepers do their job and how the animals interact with them,” curator and former zoo keeper Terry Webb said.
“It’s good to know you’re appreciated and there’s always a visitor who’s there to tell you that, and it does mean a lot to us,” zoo keeper Jeff Owen said.
Zoo keepers at the N.C. Zoo also train many of the animals and give presentations to zoo visitors.
National Zoo Keeper Week runs through Saturday.
