Officials continue search for SUV after fatal hit and run

GUILFORD COUNTY – The North Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to look for the driver of a silver Dodge Durango after officers say the driver hit and killed a Summerfield cyclist then fled the scene.

David Sherman, 55, was killed Saturday night on Church Street when the driver struck him.

“It's tragic when we have a cyclist that's killed or injured on our roadways,” Jeff Sovich, who heads up the cyclist advocacy group Bicycling in Greensboro, said.

The group's mission is to make Greensboro a more bicycle-friendly community through education and advocacy. Officials say education is where everyone can benefit.

“It can be frustrating to be behind a cyclist and we understand that but it's also our responsibility to slow down, look around and to effectively share the road,” Hanna Cockburn, a representative with the N.C. State Bicycle Committee, said.

But she says there are things both cyclists and drivers can do to be safer on the roadways. For cyclists, it's important to be visible, wear light-colored clothing, a helmet and have the reflectors on the front and back of the bike.

For drivers, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and to avoid doing things that can distract you like talking or texting on a cell phone.

“Safety should be in the forefront of everyone's mind when you hit the road, no matter what form of transportation you are using, whether it be a car, a bicycle or even walking,” Cockburn said.

“People's lives and livelihoods are at stake and we have a responsibility to look out for each other,” Sovich said.

Police are still looking for the silver Dodge Durango that hit Sherman. They say the SUV was last seen heading north on Church near Highway 150.

Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities immediately.

“It's tragic and it's very sad and we hope that this will serve as a real reminder to all drivers to be safe out there,” Cockburn said.
