UNC donor Walter Davis dies at age 88

CHAPEL HILL -- The family of Walter R. Davis said the North Carolina oil tycoon and philanthropist died at the age of 88.
Davis died Monday night at his home in Chapel Hill following a period of declining health. Davis was a major donor to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also had strong influence in education and politics in the state.
The son of a North Carolina farmer, Davis went to Texas and made his fortune in the oil industry before returning to North Carolina.
Davis' son-in-law Bob Eubanks said the funeral would be held Friday.
