WILLOW SPRING, N.C. -- An animal welfare organization wants to take permanent custody of a group of horses after a case of animal cruelty was discovered in Wake County.

The six horses were put in foster care in December after being found starving in a pasture, eating moldy hay, dirt and bark off of trees. A seventh horse died of complications from starvation.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund filed a suit against the horses’ owners – Michael and Judy Keating and their daughter Gayle Keating. The group hopes a judge will order the Keatings to pay for the care of the horses and not acquire any new animals for 10 years.
