RALEIGH -- Timothy Clark was dressed as The Flash to take on the Krispy Kreme Challenge, which he knows isn’t your average race.
"It's a challenge to come out here and it's a lot of fun, to say that you ran two miles, ate 12 donuts, then ran two more,” said Clark, who’s a sophomore at N.C. State University. “That's not something your average person does."
The challenge, now in its fifth year, started as a dare among college friends at NCSU before organizers decided to turn it into a fundraiser. The second annual race drew more than 150 runners and raised $800 for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill. Last year, there were more than 3,000 runners who brought in $20,000 for the hospital. Organizers hope the 5,200 participants and 200 supporters this year can raise $35,000.
"Certainly the funds that they raise for this go to a spectacular cause,” said Dr. Alan Stiles, the hospital’s physician in chief. “It crosses all the lines. Every county in the state is going to benefit from the work they're doing here."
Participants who have been training for the race say the challenge is not really in the four miles but in eating a dozen donuts.
"It's 2,400 calories,” said John Cochran, who was running the race for the first time with other members of the East Carolina University running club. “Hopefully, we can burn some of it off during the race."
Kristina Milan and her friend have been training for a 10-mile race. They weren’t sure how to practice the eating portion, so they came with strategies.
"We just stacked up our donuts and figured, mentally, that would be the easiest way to get through the first dozen is just to eat six in one sandwich, then go from there and see how we can finish," she said.
But, race veterans like Clark know it's easier said than done, especially since the challenge is to finish everything in under an hour.
"I haven't eaten Krispy Kreme donuts since the last race,” Clark said. “They don't really look the same to me anymore."
