CHAPEL HILL – Emergency officials have released the 911 call made by UNC-Chapel Hill student, Courtland Smith, moments before he was shot and killed by a police officer along Interstate 85.
Police say officers stopped a car just before 5 a.m. Sunday morning in Randolph County after a caller asked for help, saying he was suicidal. Authorities say a confrontation ensued, and Smith was shot.
"Once the vehicle came to a stop, a confrontation ensued between the subject and Archdale officers and an Archdale police officer shot the subject," said Chief Darrell Gibbs.
The junior, from Texas, was pronounced dead at High Point Regional Hospital. The SBI is investigating.
“After hearing the 911 tape, we were saddened and surprised at what we heard given the last contact Courtland had at the fraternity,” said Chris Rice, a local alumnus and Delta Kappa Epsilon spokesperson, in a released statement. “We continue to grieve the loss of Courtland, and 30 of his brothers will attend his funeral service in Houston, Texas, Friday.
A private memorial services was held for Smith at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill on Wednesday.
