Political Connections: Road funding
By: News 14 Carolina Staff
NORTH CAROLINA -- Currently, the state maintains more roads than any other state except for Texas. In most states, counties maintain a portion of roads as well.
This past session, lawmakers gave counties the right to build some roads. Now, there is some discussion that counties and towns pitch in more.
The Department of Transportation estimates a $65 billion shortfall building roads in the next 25 years. This leaves the question: who should pay for what?
To discuss this, News 14 Carolina has welcomed Sen. Richard Stevens to the studio. The Republican represents Wake County, where he was also once county manager. He now serves on transportation committees, including the Blue Ribbon Committee.
To give a county perspective on the matter, News 14 Carolina also welcomed Paul Meyer from the County Commissioners Association into the studio.
News 14 wants to know what you think. Do you think counties should pitch in to help fund roads across the state? As of 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, 57 percent of voters answered ‘no.’ Be sure to cast your vote in the poll to the right, and leave a comment about your opinion on the subject.
