WINSTON-SALEM -- The 2-0 Deacons are already looking like an ACC contender after their wins against East Carolina and Oral Roberts.
Sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu was selected as this season's first ACC Player of the Week after averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds.
"All this summer I've really been working on my game," said Aminu. "The main reason was how we left last season. I knew that from last season I needed to become a better shooter in order for people to come and play me and become a better player.
“I knew this year I'd have to do a little more scoring since two of our top scorers are gone."
With the absence of Jeff Teague and James Johnson, who have gone to the pros, senior Ishmael Smith is back to being the team leader.
"It is different,” said Smith. “I can't even lie because last year I was like the sparkplug and now I'm back out there being the leader.
"I think I kind of rushed it the first game, but last game I got a little more comfortable. I thank my guys for that. They kind of worked with me and adjusted to it."
The Deacon's next take on Triad-rival High Point University for the first time in nine seasons. The 1-0 Panthers are coming off a 104-72 beating of UNC-Pembroke last Saturday.
"I think it's going to be a difficult challenge for us," said head coach, Dino Gaudio. "They're very fast, they push the ball up the floor. They run what we call a dribble-drive offense where they try to take you off the bounce, get your help-side defense to suck in a little bit and kick out for threes. They shot 25 threes against UNC-Pembroke."
