GREENSBORO -- The Guilford College men's basketball team is ranked third in the country by the D3Hoops.com preseason poll. This season the Quakers return three starters of 14 letter winners from last year's team the finished third in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Sporting News has named center Tyler Sanborn a preseason all-American after a breakout season earning South Region Player of the Year and Fourth Team All-America honors. Sanborn averages 15 points, 13 rebounds and 2.5 blocks a game.

"They always push me to get better,” said Sanborn, who attributes his success to his coaches and teammates. “I came in here kind of embarrassed the way I was. I really wanted to work on getting better. And coach, he really pushed me to do the things that I needed to do."

Tom Palumbo, head coach and athletic director, has taken the Quakers to the NCAA Division III playoffs three straight years and has twice been named the South Region Coach of the Year.

"You've got to have good players,” said Palumbo. “That's one thing we've been able to do here is not just recruit good players but recruit good people.

“They're great representatives of Guilford College. They work hard and they do what they're told. They practice hard. It carries over into the games and also carries over not only into the Guilford campus but into the Guilford community."

Palumbo's teams are characterized by a full-court defensive pressure and up-tempo offense. This season, the team looks to repeat their success while remaining focused.

“Last year was great -- we went to the Final Four but we never accomplished goal No. 1,” said Palumbo. “We never won the conference tournament and I think these guys really want that and I think it's going to drive them."

Added Sanborn: "Our first goal needs to be winning game one and taking it game by game. Our eventual goal will be to make the conference tournament, then the conference championship, then the NCAA tournament and whatever happens from there. We've got to take it one step at a time and that's how we look at our season."

Guilford College opens their season on Nov. 13 against the Italian Jr. National Team.
