WILMINGTON – UNC Wilmington is the first university in the UNC System to get a special iPhone application.

With a flick of a finger, students and community members will be able to use their iPhones to find out more about UNCW.

The free app was created by UNCW students Phillip Whisenhunt and Ricardo Valea to address the need for instant information on campus.

"Definitely want information at the touch of your finger," said Whisenhunt. "A hundred years ago, you had to remember everything, now you can just sit on a computer and look up anything."

The computer science majors said anyone can now turn to their iPhones to access information about upcoming campus events, activities and news. Students can also use the application to view UNCW YouTube videos.

"I hope students take away that the school is moving forward in mobile technology, making information more readily available," said Valea.

Now, the undergraduates are operating their own business to market the application.

"We hope to take this application to other universities and market it to say, Chapel Hill, N.C. State and numerous other North Carolina schools," said Whisenhunt.

The UNCW students are the first in the UNC system to create the iPhone application. Duke is the only other school in the state that also has an official university mobile application for iPhones.
