WALNUT COVE – Liquor-by-the-drink; It's always a topic that garners plenty of debate. This November people in the small Stokes County town of Walnut Cove will vote on the issue.

Politics and faith are once again facing off on the upcoming proposition. This time in the small town where it seems there's a church on every corner.

"It hasn't dominated church conversation, it comes up here and there, when it does come up it is in the negative way that we don't, that it's something that the people do not want," says John Pierce, minister at Willow Oak Baptist Church.

But people around town definitely know about the upcoming vote in November on mixed drink sales, a proposition voted on and approved by town commissioners in August.

"It would bring other businesses, restaurants, that sort of thing into the town," says proposition supporter and bakery owner Sallie Brown.

The upcoming vote on mixed-drink sales has caused some debate.

Those in support of the issue think the key to that economic development is allowing the sale of mixed drinks at restaurants and hotels as well as other places. But John Pierce sees the issue differently.

"Being a Christian, I believe more than anything to trust in God and his blessing on the community especially when they stand for what he has taught us to believe in and to have that integrity," Pierce stated.

Walnut Cove's population is just shy of 1,600. Religious leaders there say most of the people living in this small town follow more conservative, religious values and would not support a liquor-by-the-drink proposition.

"Just as Christians we don't see the benefits of alcohol use, we don't see much benefit to the community," Pierce says.

"But I also believe that people have the right to drink when they have their dinner and I don't think it's going to infringe on that at all," Brown rebuts.
