NORTH CAROLINA -- Playoff football is in full swing for high school teams across the state, as Friday night’s action brought some monster match-ups, as well as a few huge rivalries.
No rivalry was bigger than the rematch of Independence and Butler, after a one-point Butler victory Nov. 2 amid the Independence coaching controversy shook the rankings of our 14 to Watch.
Patriot Head Coach Tom Knotts was taken away from his team after an altercation with a fan in a junior varsity game earlier this year. He missed the loss to Butler, and made his return to the field this week, looking to coach his team to victory, and some vengeance, against the cross-town archenemy Bulldogs.
In the end, behind an amazing game from Patriot running back Rod Chisholm, Independence got their revenge and moved on in the playoffs with a 20-7 victory.
There’s only one way to celebrate after a big win: group hug.
Across the state, Leesville Road and Wake Forest Rolesville faced off in another epic battle between two unwavering offenses. It was the rematch of one of the biggest games of the year, when Wake Forest Rolesville defeated Leesville road 21-14 on Nov. 2.
Leesville Road, who was held to their lowest point total of the season in that one loss, looked for retribution against the barely undefeated squad from Wake Forest, who had two one-point victories on the season.
When the big rematch came to an end, Leesville Road had also achieved their revenge, beating Wake Forest Rolesville 21-6.
