Drought will impact future Christmas tree supply

By: David Kernodle

CHARLOTTE -- Christmas tree farmers may be smiling now but they might not be in a few years.

The National Christmas Tree Association reports that about 30 million trees will be sold this year, that’s up from last year, but the bad news is that 20 to 40 percent of this year’s plant died because of the drought.

"What it does is that most people will have to go back this next year and reset, and so the trees they reset with will be a year or so behind," said Kevin Jones, of www.ncfrasers.com.

Tree farmers say many of the trees sold this year were cut late to help retain some of their moisture.
