CHARLOTTE -- Two former UNC system presidents are speaking out against football at UNC Charlotte.

Dick Spangler and Bill Friday spoke to faculty at UNCC about their dislike for the proposal during a meeting Thursday afternoon.

"Football is entertainment, and while many of us enjoy entertainment, this is not a good idea," said Spangler, who also feels a program would "divert resources away from academic affairs."

Spangler has a long list of other reasons why he feels university leaders should steer clear of bringing football to campus. He voiced many of those in front of UNCC faculty, administrators and students like Justin Ritchie, who wasn’t sure Spangler’s feelings would be shared by many on campus.

"I think the arguments didn't really sink in against football for the students,” said Ritchie, who is president of the Student Government Association.

Some of those arguments came from a study by an independent athletic commission on intercollegiate athletics.

The final decision on football for UNCC will be made by the university’s chancellor and trustees.

The findings show:

•The entertainment industry has too much control over athletic decisions.

•There’s dissatisfaction with athletic governance.

•Coaches’ salaries are excessive.

•Player academic performances aren’t satisfactory.

•Player compensation isn’t fair.

Friday hints that the same findings could eventually be found at UNCC. Both men hope to muster enough support to sway university leaders to ax the proposal all together.
