CHAPEL HILL -- Off-campus emergency call boxes could be coming to Chapel Hill. Town leaders will host a public information meeting Tuesday on this new safety initiative.
The Chapel Hill Police Department and the University of North Carolina student government want to install three emergency call boxes downtown and put up new pedestrian-level lighting on Rosemary Street between Hillsborough and Boundary streets.
This is an initiative UNC student body president Eve Carson worked on before her death.
The proposed emergency call boxes are already available on the UNC campus.
The proposed safety features are already available on campus; the measure being discussed Tuesday night would bring them into the downtown area where many students live off-campus, an area where police say they have received a number of calls about break-ins, fighting and noise complaints.
The new call boxes, which have a direct line to 911, would be for anyone to use.
No public money would be used for the project; the UNC student government has pledged $80,000 to pay for it.
The public meeting gets under way at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
