Slain UNC student receives degree

CHAPEL HILL -- A special degrees was given out Sunday at UNC-Chapel Hill's graduation ceremony.
Slain student body president Eve Carson was awarded posthumous with a bachelor of arts degree with a double major in biology and political science.
A page in the commencement program was also dedicated to Carson.
The 22-year-old from Athens, Ga., was found fatally shot March 5 on a street near campus. Demario Atwater and Lawrence Lovette Jr. are charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.
Lovette is also charged in connection with the death of 29-year-old Abjihit Mahato. The graduate student was robbed and shot inside his apartment in January.
Mahato would have graduated from Duke University on Sunday with a PhD in engineering.
