CHARLOTTE -- An apparent argument about unpaid rent turned deadly. Police say a Charlotte landlord was killed Tuesday night after fighting with a tenant.

The incident happened on Zircon Street in southeast Charlotte. The landlord, Jacob Massachi was shot and killed just before 5 p.m. after getting into a fight with Shawn Howard, a tenant who was evicted from his apartment.

After the shooting, Howard fled to Matthews, where police later arrested him around 9 p.m. Police found Massachi's body inside a white van. Witnesses here actually saw the fight happen and were able to give police vital details that lead to Howard's arrest.

Howard doesn't have a criminal history in Mecklenburg County but he did serve prison time in New York. He's now in the Mecklenburg County jail facing murder charges.
