Officers kill suspect in firefight
SALISBURY -- A Salisbury man who police say opened fire on officers was shot and killed by police on the scene.

Salisbury Police Chief Mark Wilhelm said the man fired several shots at officers before he was killed. Now, two Salisbury police officers and one Rowan County sheriff's deputy are on administrative duty while the State Bureau of Investigation looks into the shooting.

Wilhelm said a woman called 911 around 2 a.m. to report an armed robbery at the Rushco Gas Station. The caller said the four men left the scene in a white Toyota Camry.

A patrol officer spotted that car a short time later and went to the apartment where it was parked. Police said that's when the young man ran.

"As they knocked on the front door, the shooting victim went out the back door," Wilhelm said.

When police gave chase, he said, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired. The officers fired back, hitting and killing the suspect

"[I'm] glad I'm not talking about an officer being killed," Wilhelm said. "But I have no pleasure about anyone else being killed as well."

Wilhelm said the department is still investigating the events leading up to the shooting. Police are not releasing the name of the victim.
